It took thousands of years of years before the development of any kind of bicycle, much less an electric bike. The sailboat, for example, was invented thousands of years before a two wheel bicycle and whole process of sailing "upwind" is incredibly complex. 

Bicycles seem simple, and humans should have been able to build this two wheel system of locomotion a hundred thousand years ago. In fact, the bicycle with two wheels and pedal driven was not invented until around 1850. There is something that seems impossible about balancing oneself on two small wheels. Even more, moving forward while balancing oneself on two small wheels!

In less than 50 years we began to build electric bikes. Why? Because humans have always sought to improve everything thing we have ever built or have ever conceived. Electric bikes are a step forward and 50 years from now there may be a new technology that will replace the electric bike. For today, the electric bike is the number one choice for replacing the car, for commuting to work, for getting exercise, for taking the children to school, and for just being able to ride a bicycle farther and more often than any other time.
